The site is located in Mölndal, on the outskirts of Gothenburg, and it is integrated in a science and technology park, with focus on the health industry, next to renowned companies such as Astra Zeneca.
Mölnlycke Health Care is a Swedish company that provides the design and supply of medical and clinical tools in various fields of the health industry.
The project commission was to design the new headquarters of the company, comprehending 18’000m2 of a mixed program. The main blocks of the building’s program were divided into offices, labs, meetings and conference rooms, exhibition rooms and two restaurants (one for the building users and another open to the general public).
The whole building works as a block which is carved in the middle, generating two great atriums with a glass roof, around which all the programs are accommodated. It’s as well around these two atriums that all the circulation of the building happens, through the tree lift and stairs cores, as well as through several bridges that connect those same cores. The atriums themselves are intended for common activities, making the East atrium more public and the West one more private. These two great collective spaces are complemented by a canteen on the fourth floor for the company members, with connection into a rooftop garden. Finally, on the street level facing the main street in the South, a restaurant is intended for the surrounding area. The office areas, they are planned within a flexible layout, not only to accommodate different working set ups (single stations/ open office/ meeting areas), but also dimensioned having in mind the new remote-work reality, meaning each person is not 100% of the time working at the office.
As for the building materiality, a great deal of its elements are in wood. Both the inner atriums facades and the building’s outer facade. The woody environment is complemented with stone elements as for the flooring in the collective spaces and some of the furniture.
In terms of structure, a hybrid solution is implemented, being the main structure established through steel beams and pillars and concrete slabs, and towards the atriums there are wooden pillars and beams, as well as the atrium’s roof structure is made of wood beams. The outer facades are responsive to the Sun orientation both in terms of shading elements as well as in glass % amount.
Regarding the building’s sustainability standards , the project achieves two very extensive sustainability certifications from the Swedish Green Building Council, namely the LEED gold certifications and the NollCO2-certification.
